How Radar Technology is Bringing Safety
In 2015, two people were killed, and more than 60 others were injured as 106 vehicles collided in foggy weather on a bridge near Incheon International Airport in South Korea. Due to the thick fog, you could only see less than 10 meters ahead. However, if the vehicles were equipped with radar system such accidents would have never happened. This is why we are dedicated to developing radar technology not only for the autonomous vehicles but for every and any cars to enhance safety and reduce road accidents.
According to the US Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 94% of accidents on US roads occur due to human error. So self-driving vehicles could drastically reduce the number of crashes and fatalities that occur on the roads today.
Our final goal is to develop a sensor for autonomous vehicles by using camera and radar sensor only. Considering Lidar sensor’s vulnerability in bad weather and high cost, we believe camera and radar sensor fusion is the only viable solution and if we can replace the Lidar sensors in autonomous vehicles, we can bring the cost of autonomous vehicle sensors down to 1/50.
bitsensing is currently developing high resolution 4D imaging radar fused with camera for self-driving cars - AIR 4D, which stands for Augmented Imaging Radar. We aim to introduce our prototype next year in CES 2021 and will be running various feasibility test and proof of concept projects with mobility platforms and OEMs.
Meanwhile we will launch 77GHz Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for both before and after-market this year. We have already developed 24GHz traffic radar that can collect real-time traffic information. The traffic radar can collect information that automotive radar cannot and through V2X or I2X technology this information can be shared and communicated to enhance road safety. Traffic radar can also be connected to traffic signal control system for adaptive traffic control for that can reduce accidents, travel loss time and greenhouse gas emissions.
We are also integrating our radar technology to other application. Unlike camera, radar does not collect optical data so it can be used in smart home or digital healthcare(telehealth) application. For example it can be used to prevent accidents or support rescue in case of fire or earthquake or used to optimize energy efficiency by presence and gesture based lighting control or even for sleep quality analysis.
