Radar for Obstacle Detection and Robotics
Radar for Robotics
EInternational Federation of Robotics (IFR) categorizes various types of robots into ‘Service Robots’ and ‘Industrial Robots’. Industrial robots are used in factories in automating production and service robots are used in various settings to provide valuable services. According to Research and Markets, Service Robotics market is valued at USD 14.39 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach USD 63.8 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 25.34% over the forecast period of 2020-2025. COVID-19 is changing our world, how we live and how we interact with each other. Service Robots are expected to play vital role in this new world. There are various types of Service Robots and used in various industries- Social Robots help elderly or disabled people, Entertainment Robots, Delivery Robots, Rescue Robots, Medical Robots, Agricultural Robots to name a few.
Bitsensing has installed our radar sensor in a robot to conduct SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) Test for stationary and moving object detection to test its capabilities to be used in robots that need obstacle detection.
In this video you can see how our radar sensor is collecting and mapping the data for stationary and moving object recognition.
Currently LiDAR sensors are commonly used to detect obstacles in Robots but the biggest issue with LiDAR sensor is high cost. Camera sensors are great, but they can create privacy issue. Radar sensor can effectively replace LiDAR and Camera sensor by lowering the cost while maintaining privacy.
