How Radar Technology is Delivering Intelligence to Traffic Infrastructure

Traffic Insight Monitoring Sensor for Smart Traffic and Cities

Imagine a city where sitting in unnecessary traffic is a headache of that past - a place with smart traffic lights, convenient traffic management and real-time traffic data and analysts at your fingertips. Well, this utopia is now a reality thanks to the Traffic Insight Monitoring Senor (TIMOS). The world is reaching a new level of intelligence with the introduction of this revolutionary technology, already integrated into some of the world’s largest cities.

WHY TIMOS?

Traffic congestion is one of the most visible, pervasive, and immediate transport problems plaguing people in cities around the world on a daily basis. Not only does it cause economic issues for people having to fill up gas more often and at a higher price, but we can all agree that traffic is just downright annoying.

Additionally, traffic accidents across the globe are also seeing a massive uptick because of more drivers on the road, distracted driving, and the inefficient flow of traffic. The U.S. traffic accident rate soared in 2022, hitting a 20-year high, while Korea saw the largest increase in traffic accidents because of lane changes.

These traffic issues continue to be a significant issue globally because of the lack of infrastructure growth while the number of vehicles on roads increases. Some think road expansions are the answer, yet they have been indiscriminately and inadequately added, causing more fuel to the fire when it comes to traffic.

This is where the importance of ITS is growing to resolve not only traffic congestion and accidents but also environmental issues such as gas emissions. And TIMOS is the ultimate solution for ITS as we have a reliable, efficient, and frankly genius solution to this global issue.

Wait, ITS?

ITS stands for Intelligent Transportation System, an advanced application aiming to provide innovative services relating to transport and traffic management modes. With seamless traffic management data, ITS helps reduce the need for monitoring, controlling, and operating traffic manually. Plus, with adaptive traffic signal controllers, waiting time for vehicles at signals or intersections can be reduced significantly, ultimately reducing CO2 emissions and contributing to the environment.

So Again, Why TIMOS?

TIMOS, powered by NVIDIA Jetson, is the first ever Intelligent Transport System radar with edge AI computing going beyond existing traffic systems to bring unprecedented insights for traffic management.

TIMOS allows the real-time detection of incidents happening on the road to help provide information to traffic control as well as navigation systems. TIMOS can provide advanced detection information including the presence of vehicles, average speed, queue length information and the time it will take to cross lanes.

TIMOS can also provide event trigger information that can be incredibly useful in preventing traffic accidents. Information including the detection of incoming traffic, speed violations, vehicle class detection, wrong-way driving, stopped vehicles, lane changing, and jaywalking, are all now possible thanks to this all-in-one powerhouse technology.

The high compatibility with the central system allows easy management and automated software updates, eliminating any need for manual adjustments on the device requiring resource and traffic blockage. It’s a true dream for cities wanting to create real change but do not currently have a high-tech infrastructure.

Design + Capabilities

The sleek design of TIMOS allows for the elimination of the complex process of external PCs and cables enabling a seamless installation and simple ongoing management. This single system technology speeds the procedure from data collection to analyzation thanks to the GPU formfactor all while being cost effective for implementation across the globe.  After the initial installation, no additional manual actions or external resources are needed with the automated system updates and positioning features.

So, how many cars can this technology detect? The depth of TIMOS is unmatched with the capability to detect up to 256 vehicles simultaneously running up to 320km spanning across 8 lanes. Sixty-four customized zones can be set for eight different events to track multiple situations on complex roads and give real-time analysis.

So, this powerhouse technology can virtually be integrated anywhere in the world, in any city across the globe, to provide the ultimate traffic system available on the market today.

We Are Developing Smart Cities in Korea with TIMOS

Today TIMOS is installed in many cities in Korea to provide real-time traffic monitoring, contributing to the cities’ plan to create intelligent infrastructures.

In Wonju City and Jeju Island, TIMOS is now delivering real-time data for government task-based research and performance tests. bitsensing is working with these two cities for the Road Traffic Information Convergence Technology based on Lv.4 Autonomous Driving to develop traffic management technology for cooperative traffic control.

In Daegu Metropolitan City, TIMOS is installed for actual ITS application projects to develop smart intersections, smart crosswalks, and VDS (Vehicle Detection Systems). Through this, we expect TIMOS to become the model for other cities and globally, showing the potential to solve urban problems.

bitsensing is also working with the Korea ROAD Traffic Authority (KoROAD) on various projects to create an intelligent traffic infrastructure in Korea.

We’re Helping to Save the Planet, too

Our experienced team of talented engineers and innovators created the powerful product TIMOS to continue to exceed the industry standard in radar solutions while paving the way for the most reliable and advanced smart city infrastructure. We also are proud that because TIMOS will improve traffic congestion in cities, it will save governments tens of billions won in social costs. This technology also helps protect the environment because it does not require the expansion of roads to find the solution.
